Profile of Anthea Cox - Labour Party parliamentary candidate

Anthea Cox
Anthea is a has at least two jobs being a Director of Learning Disability Coalition and an Associate of Frontline Consulting. Also Anthea is the coordinating secretary for public life and social justice at the Methodist church. Obviously, a good hard worker. The question I have for Anthea is: Are you willing to throw this all away to become a Labour MP for Huntingdon?

As a Peterborough City Councillor, Anthea was one of the 2 Councillors for Ravensthorpe Ward. At the 2002 elections a Conservative, Gul Nawaz, was elected. Once elected, Gul was sent to prison for 2 months for benefit fraud. I quote from a Peterborough Newspaper:

Anthea Cox, leader of the city's labour group and a fellow Ravensthorpe councillor, said: "People have been very angry when they have received the letter. There is the issue that he stood for election with the case coming up. They feel their trust has been betrayed. The Conservative Party should take action and he should step down."

In another article:
Today, Anthea Cox, leader of the Labour group on Peterborough City Council, said she was outraged that Mr Ancram would not be drawn on the matter. She said: "I am really shocked that the national party is not taking some sort of stance. You can see why they want to distance themselves from this, because it is very embarrassing, but that does not address the issue. They should say: 'This is what we are going to do about it'."

At the 2004 elections Gul Nawaz was re-elected. At the same elections Anthea didn't stand in Ravensthorpe. Anthea stood in Orton with Hampton Ward and came a poor fifth. Gul was re-elected in 2008.

Unable to beat a man sent to prison, having Anthea battle against Djanogly with his expenses scandals will not work!

Information from some of the websites found on a Google search:
Anthea served as a Peterborough City Councillor for nine years where her roles included chair of the community services committee and, when in opposition, Leader of the Labour Group. She was a senior member providing leadership, as Peterborough became a Unitary Authority ensuring a successful transition. Representing a ward with considerable numbers of people experiencing deprivation meant that housing, community cohesion and work with young people were strategic priorities that Anthea actively championed, including the establishment of a new community trust.
Anthea’s other roles have included tutoring Return to Learn and Lifelong Learning Advisors courses for the WEA and UNISON, developing innovative day services for people with learning disabilities, non-executive director of an NHS trust and parliamentary candidate. Most recently Anthea has provided leadership in social policy and campaigning for the Methodist Church, including considerable media work on significant and often controversial issues, meetings with government ministers, intensive networking with other partners and mobilising members. Anthea is a trained drama practitioner and has expertise in International Human Rights Law. (Found at this website.)

Learning Disability Coalition takes on new Director
Anthea Cox has become the new Director of campaigning organisation the Learning Disability Coalition on August 10th 2009, replacing Heather Honour, who retired in July.
Cox previously directed the social justice work of the Methodist Church in Great Britain, leading on the Make Poverty History campaign. She is a former senior Peterborough City Councillor, non-executive Director of the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust and the founder of Goldhay Arts, an innovative day service for people with learning disabilities.
The Learning Disability Coalition is formed of 15 learning disability organisations including Mencap, Sense, National Autistic Society and People First. It campaigns for better funding for adults with learning disabilities.
Commenting on her appointment, Cox said:
“It is exciting to be joining the Learning Disability Coalition at a time of enormous change in adult social care.
“The Government’s Green Paper on the future of adult social care is a once-in-a-generation chance to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities. My concern is that funding for services for this group of people is simply not on the political agenda.
“I am looking forward to working with the Coalition’s members to ensure that the case for good quality, well-funded support is kept firmly in the spotlight.”
